What Makes Content WorthWhile Consuming?

You may be rolling your eyes at seeing the word “value” repeatedly. I do it often.

But it’s genuinely something your content cannot be without.

Content needs to be useful for your audience to stop and know it’s worth their time to consume.

What makes people stop and read, watch, or listen to your content?

There is no short answer, as many factors make your audience stop scrolling and take an interest in YOUR content.

Here are the most significant factors:

  1. Your audience first needs to find your content.
  2. Your content is readable, listenable, and watchable (a mouthful, I know).
  3. Your content is perceivable.
  4. Your content is actionable
  5. Your content is shareable.

  1.

It’s quite a list, and it takes time and practice to master it, but it’s a golden process when you do.

So how do people discover your content?

1. Findable Content: Can’t Miss It

Creating findable content involves:

    • Brainstorming and drafting

    • Producing specifically for your audience.

    • Optimizing it for search engines.

    • Utilizing effective promotion strategies.

Here are at least five steps (there are more ways, but then I’ll turn this blog into a monster document) to help you create more discoverable content:

  1. Quality content creation: Focus on creating high-quality content that provides value to your audience. Make it informative, engaging, and relevant, and this will increase the likelihood that others will share and link to your content, which may favorably affect search engine rankings.
  2. Keyword research: Identify appropriate keywords that people are searching for when searching for content like yours. Excellent tools such as Google Keyword Planner, Answer the Public, SEMrush, or Moz Keyword Explorer can help you find popular and relevant keywords in your niche.
  3. Social media promotion: Share relevant content with your target audience across social media platforms. Encourage sharing, likes, and comments to increase visibility and reach.
  4. Optimization: Optimize your content for mobile devices. Craft compelling and keyword-rich meta titles and meta descriptions for your blog posts, podcasts, video show notes, or pages.
  5. Analytics and monitoring: Monitor your website’s performance using tools like Google Analytics and track metrics like traffic sources, bounce rates, and engagement to evaluate the effectiveness of your content and make necessary adjustments. Track podcast progress (Blubrry, Transistor, Simplecast, etc.), and remember your social media platform analytics (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc.).

  1.

I’ll emphasize this one: BE CONSISTENT in publishing.

Remember that creating findable content is an ongoing process. Regularly update and optimize your content based on new keywords, user feedback, and search engine and social media algorithm changes to maintain its discoverability.

2. Readable, Listenable, Watchable Content

Depending on whether you’re creating a blog post, podcast episode, or video content, here are some tips to get it consumed.

Blog Posts

Today, speed reading is a big thing. Scanning a text is a huge thing. So that means:

  • Your sentences should be short (your SEO tool will also point this out).
  • We all love speed and efficiency, so allow your audience to consume your content quickly by writing out bulleted or numbered points.
  • Use consistent brand language and expression; it’s your business, and your values and beliefs churned into EVERY piece of content you make.

Podcast Episodes

While listening to a podcast episode, many people are multitasking. Many are listening to your podcast episode while driving, walking, running, cleaning the house… you get my drift. After an episode, they will click the + sign and add your podcast to their listening list.

But for them to do so, you need to be:

  • YOU: authentic, relatable, just be YOU by also not following others while,
  • Indeed good at what you do
  • Sharpening your interview skills if you are interviewing others.
  •

Videos

Videos are not only entertaining; they are also educational. That’s where this new word, “edutainment,” is founded.

For viewed videos, they should:

  • Be informational so that it helps your audience learn something,
  • Be fun to watch, so focus on sound, movement, and speech. and,
  • Be structured and optimized for the published location where you’ll share the video.
  •

3. Perceivable Content

Plain and straightforward, clarity allows your content to be easily understandable to consume; this means your audience can read, listen or watch and understand your content without effort.

Here are a few tips:

  • keep it short and sweet
  • stay on topic
  • provide a solid structure
  • create visuals, transitions
  • be natural
  • use white space
  • optimize for mobile
  •

4. Actionable Content

There’s a purpose for each piece of content you create.

You want your audience to take action so you can fulfill that purpose.

Which means you need to help your audience take action.

Show your audience what to do next after immersing themselves in your content. Here are a few pointers:

  • Add an encourageable CTA (Call To Action) at the end of your content,
  • Connect with your audience, allow them to leave comments, contact you directly, email you…
  • Make it easy for them to do the CTA – book a call with you, invest in your services, digital course…
  •

5. Shareable Content

  • Show up with your quirky personality, and people will want to share
  • Voice your opinion – some will love ya, and others will go the other way,
  • Give a good reason for sharing; for instance, say, “Share this post because it might help your coworker who is biting his nails when he needs to sit down and create content.”
  • Make an easy clickable sharing method for your audience.
  •

Summary

Let’s quickly summarize:

First and foremost, your audience must be able to find your content. Think of it as a treasure hunt, where you strategically place clues and signposts to guide them straight to your virtual treasure trove.

But what good is finding your content if it’s challenging to consume? You confuse, you lose, right?

Now, let’s talk about perception. Your content should be like a beautifully wrapped present, enticing your audience from the moment they look at it and hear it.

But we’re not here to just entertain; we want our content to drive action! Make your words jump off the page and compel your readers to take that next step.

And last but certainly not least, the power of shareability. Your content should be so captivating and irresistible that your audience can’t help but spread the word far and wide.

Remember, it may take time and practice, but with each piece of valuable content you create, you’re one step closer to capturing the hearts and minds of your audience. Now go forth, create, and let your content shine like the brightest star in the digital galaxy!
